I returned just after the Fourth of July from a painting tour of Orcas Island, WA--perhaps the most beloved of the San Juan Islands. Orville and I spent five days cabin-camping and painting outdoors. We didn't paint from life; I just made my studio outdoors and painted from photos taken while exploring the island.
The people of Orcas Island were extraordinarily friendly, in spite of being overrun for the holiday. I sensed a welcoming support of art and artists. And I even got a tour of a lush garden and beaver damn by a local couple who thought I might find some paintings there. And I did.
I haven't painted the beaver damn, or the nighthawks, or lily pads I encountered on that tour yet. But I painted Marguerite's Garden.
